Forgiveness is tough...… sometimes it feels impossible. We’ve all been wronged somehow,… and I think it’s safe to assume we’ve all done our fair share of wronging others. That word “wrong” implies something...… it implies that some part of the equation was indeed off, some action unjust, something was just plain not good... it was wrong. And when that's the case, forgiveness seems easier. When there is some sort of acknowledgement of “wrongdoing” forgiveness seems possible. So when “wrong” never enters the picture, then what? I guess that’s the hardest part of forgiveness for me...
letting go of hard feelings or resentment toward someone who did something they acknowledged as being 100% right. In fact, the person I need to forgive is proud of what they did. And yes, they’d do it all over again… OUCH! And that’s why I appreciate the words of Jesus in the Easter story...… wrongly accused, sentenced to die, humiliated and tortured, then minutes away from death he says, “Forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing.” There’s nothing right about that story. Now, I’ve never been sentenced to death or tortured, but I have been humiliated and hurt... and the wounds run deep...… deeper when the wrongs done are acknowledged as right. But Jesus’ words uncover a brilliant truth... forgiveness isn’t about THEM saying THEY’re sorry...… it’s not about THEM acknowledging actions as being wrong...… forgiveness isn’t about THEM at all... it’s about ME...… ME refusing to let anyone else rob ME of MY joy...… it’s about ME...… not THEM. Until next time friends, May YOU learn to forgive...… even when “wrong" never enters the picture...… even when THEY don’t know what they’re doing... even when YOU hurt and it seems impossible to forgive. May YOU forgive. And may YOU be set free...… free to joy.
