for a few years, i met with a person for lunch who expressed an interest in connecting with me.
the conversation always seemed to revolve around a certain topic: me and my future... or rather, me and his future for me. have you ever had anyone in your life who knows all of your next steps even when you don't? how is that possible? my path winds and curves. and though sometimes i can be concerned because i don't quite know where i am going, it's exciting... i feel alive. those butterflies i translate as feelings of "life" can get the best of me every now and then, but they definitely frustrated this person across the lunch table who saw a very clear and different path for me. in a roundabout manner he would tell me how disappointed he was with me. other times he would blatantly tell me how i needed to make better decisions and chart a different course to succeed in life. in his defense, i do believe he was attempting to inspire me. unfortunately it never sparked that flame. i believe that inspiration and encouragement come from a genuine place of love rather than control. don't tell me who to be... rather, tell me simply to be and let me stand at the sail. i have learned that definitions of success vary greatly, and we all need to find which one speaks to us. and the narrative of our lives must be our own. we don't read from scripts handed to us across the table. we write our own. so remember, that you are the master of YOUR sea. stand at the sail. chart YOUR course. it's YOUR future.
